3rd JML Spec-a-thon summary

The 3rd JML Spec-a-thon finished up on Friday the 5th of November. Following up on my email of the 2nd that summarized our first couple of days, we thought we’d give the community a taste of what else went on at the event and what our concrete outcomes are.

As a recap, early in the week we reviewed the “state of JML” from a language, tool, and library perspective. We spent an afternoon on this topic, documenting for ourselves and the world where we think the community could/should head, given the current state of affairs, for the benefit of all.

VSTTE 2010

Back in August, the 3rd International Conference on Verified Software: Theories, Tools and Experiments (VSTTE 2010) was hosted by Heriot-Watt in Edinburgh.

VSTTE is the flagship conference associated with the Verified Software Initiative (VSI) — a fifteen year international collaborative project directed at the scientific challenges of large-scale software verification. VSTTE 2010 clearly met the needs of the VSI by attracting strong international participation from both industry and academia.

This year’s conference introduced a number of new and highly successful features, ranging from a two day Summer School, with ten distinguished speakers and thirty students, through to a live software verification competition which attracted eleven international teams. In addition, the setting up of a Microsoft Verified Software Milestone Award was announced at the conference — an annual award, worth 5K to the winners.

ICTAC 2010, September 1-3, 2010, Natal, Brazil

The “Seventh International Colloquium on Theoretical Aspects of Computing” (ICTAC) was held in September 1-3, 2010, in Natal, Brazil. The ICTAC series of conferences brings together practitioners and researchers from academia, industry and government to present research results, and exchange experience and ideas. Beyond these scholarly goals, another main purpose is to promote cooperation in research and education between participants and their institutions, from developing and industrial countries.

At the conference, new results on modelling, grammars, semantics, logics, algorithms, and types were presented. The program included a seven-day school for students, and three invited talks in addition to 23 contributed presentations (selected from among 68 papers submitted to the conference by researchers from 24 countries). The detailed information on the conference program can be found at the conference website.

CFP: FM+AM’10

CFP: FM+AM’10: 2nd Workshop on Formal Methods and Agile Methods, Affiliated to the SEFM’10 Conference, Pisa, September 2010

By Bernhard Aichernig • May 12th, 2010 • Category: News

Formal Methods (FM) and Agile Methods (AM) are often seen as antagonists in the field of software methodololgy, but this does not necessarily be the case.

For this workshop we are seeking novel contributions that can be used for making rapid development techniques more formally sound, as well as for accelerating the speed of formally sound development techniques. This could be done for example, by:

FME-sponsored JML Spec-a-thon

A JML Spec-a-thon is a gathering of JML researchers and users for intense collaboration on JML development, modeled after other development gatherings such as the OpenBSD Hackathons and the PyPy Sprints.

Our first FME-sponsored Spec-a-thon was a great success. We had nine attendees from the U.S.A. and Europe, we worked hard and long, made T-shirts for the event, got updated on various efforts, a series of short talks were given, a keynote talk by Gary Leavens was given to an open audience, and everyone went home pretty happy.
