VerifyThis 2015 competition

The 4th VerifyThis 2015 Program Verification took place on April 12th, 2015 in London as part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS 2015). The aims of the competition were:

  • to bring together those interested in formal verification, and to provide an engaging, hands-on, and fun opportunity for discussion
  • to evaluate the usability of logic-based program verification tools in a controlled experiment that could be easily repeated by others.

During the competition, 14 teams competed on 3 challenges, presented in natural language. Two challenges provided an algorithm in pseudocode, and participants had to formalize the requirements, implement a solution, and formally verify the implementation for adherence to the specification.  For the first time, one of the pseudocode algorithms was a concurrent program. The third challenge was to implement and verify several methods on a dancing list data structure.

AVoCS & AI4FM, Edinburgh, 1-4 September 2015

The 15th International Workshop on Automated Verification of Critical Systems (AVoCS 2015 - https://sites.google.com/site/avocs15/) will take place 1-4 September 2015 in Edinburgh, UK. The aim of AVoCS is to contribute to the interaction and exchange of ideas among members of the international research community on tools and techniques for the verification of critical systems. It covers all aspects of automated verification, including model checking, theorem proving, SAT/SMT constraint solving, abstract interpretation, and refinement pertaining to various types of critical systems which need to meet stringent dependability requirements (safety-critical, business-critical, performance-critical, etc.).

FME Sad News: Peter Lucas passed away Feb. 2, 2015

We are sad to report that on the 2nd of February, 2015, Prof. Peter Lucas passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness. He is remembered by many for his important contributions to the development of computer languages, and to those connected with FME as the chairman who established the association as a free and independent organisation. Colleagues will remember him as a computer scientist whose technical passion and skill were matched by a wise, balanced, and cheerful outlook.

FME Fellowship

Dear Colleague,

The FME Board is pleased to announce the creation of the FME Fellowship, a distinction that will be awarded approximately every three years, during an FME symposium, to researchers and practitioners of formal methods.

Given in recognition of technical achievements in advancing, applying, and promoting formal methods, the fellowship rewards scientific breakthroughs and pioneering work that have made a difference to the world through advances in formal methods. This includes contributions in the following areas:

Call for Papers: FormaliSE 2015

3rd FME Workshop on Formal Methods in Software Engineering

to be held on 18 May 2015 in conjunction with

ICSE 2015 (May 16th-May 24th), in Florence, Italy

http://www.formalise.org/

INTRODUCTION

The software industry has a long-standing and well-earned reputation for failing to deliver on its promises and it is clear that still nowadays, the success of software projects with the current technologies cannot be assured. For large complex projects, many approaches have proven inadequate to assure the correct behaviour of the delivered software, despite the efforts of the (often very skilled) software engineers involved. The lack of formalization in key places makes software engineering overly sensitive to the weaknesses that are inevitable in the complex activities behind software creation. It is an increasingly complex task to develop large software systems because the systems are huge, with very complex behaviour, and many algorithms employed today are “pushing the limits” of what people can comprehend. This is where formal methods (FMs) have a huge opportunity. The main goal of the workshop is to foster integration between the formal methods and the software engineering communities.

Conference report ABZ 2014 Toulouse

By Yamine Ait Ameur (July 2014)

The 4th edition of the international conference ABZ took place in Toulouse from June 2nd to June 6th., 2014. The conference records the latest development in refinement and proof state based formal methods. It follows the success of the London (2008), Orford (2010) and Pisa (2012) editions.

This edition of ABZ was marked by two major events. In addition to ASM, B, Z, Alloy and VDM, ABZ 2014 has seen the introduction of TLA (Temporal Logic of Actions) as the sixth formal method covered by the scope of the conference. In order to emphasise the integration of TLA, Leslie LAMPORT gave an invited address entitled TLA+ for Non-Dummies, right in the year he was distinguished by the Turing Award.
